What is the Winter Boulder League?

Winter Boulder League (WBL) is our multi-gym, fun-focused comp composed of three 9-day rounds spanning across two months, followed by a standalone finals for the top 10 Novice and Intermediate men and women. Competitors can compare their individual scores against their friends, in addition to competing in teams of 4.

This year, we’ve changed things up a bit – see the “what’s changed” tab at the top for updates.

How does the competition work?

First, sign up for Solo and/or a Team of 4 people.
Then, follow the link to our Online Scorecard, fill out your details, and score yourself on each WBL boulder problem! There will be boulders of varying difficulties from Novice to Opens!

Finish a climb = 5 points
Finish a climb on your first go (flash) = +1 bonus point

Turn your scoresheet in by 7pm on the last day of each round to submit your scores, and see how you stack up!

Why no finals for Opens?

To give everyone their time to shine, we’ve kept WBL finals for Novice and Intermediate. For Open climbers, that big-stage moment lives at West Coast Blocs.

Do the teams get a finals?

No, sorry!

How does finals work?

All finalists will be notified on Monday the 20th of July with some information about dates/times . Finalists must confirm their attendance by the 21st of July, otherwise we will contact the next person in line.

Finals will be run with 4 mins climbing time, 4 mins rest time.
They will be scored and judged as per new World Climbing (formerly IFSC) rules:

Top = 25 points
Zone = 15 points
Each unsuccessful attempt = -0.1 points

How do I use the digital scorecard?
  1. To access the scoresheet, click the “Scoresheet” link above and fill out your details and your scores as you go.
  2. Hit “Save” to save your scores. You can hit “Save” as many times as you like before the submission date to save your scores. Reminder: Do not close the browser without saving, all progress will be lost!
  3. You will receive an email with a link to access your saved scoresheet. Each time you “save” the scoresheet, you will receive an email with a link to access it (remember to check your spam inbox!). You can return to the scoresheet at a later time before the final submission date of each round. Please do not create a new sheet every time as this will cause delays when we are consolidating all scores.
  4. Hit “Submit” to submit your final score! Don’t worry, you can still return to this after you have submitted it as long as it is before the final submission date of each round.
Is it a free event?

Sign up is free. However, regular Portside Boulders entry fees still apply.

How do I sign-up for a team?

Get yourself and 3 other friends together and sign your team up using our sign up/scoresheet link, which will become available on the first day of Round 1. Make sure you each enter the team name the EXACT same, or your scores may not be bundled together!

I’m a beginner, can I still sign up?

This competition is welcome to all – check and see whether you fit into our “Novice” category.

I've still got questions!
