Portside Boulders’ flagship competition West Coast Blocs is our premier, adult-focused bouldering competition fueled by the love for our community,with fantastic prizes awarded to the top three performing men and women in each category.
We’ve got an action-packed all-day event lined up that’s guaranteed to keep you on your toes, and this year it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.

CATEGORIES
Age Limits
This competition is open only to those 17 years of age and over.
If you are an Opens climber, under 17 years of age and would like to compete, please see the FAQ at the bottom of this page – “UNDER 17S SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS”.
Novice – For climbers projecting anything between Pink and Yellow Tags, this category is for you. Great for those who are just dipping their toes into competition climbing.
Intermediate – For climbers who are projecting any climbs between Blue and Red Tags. If you’ve snagged a podium spot in the Novice categories before, you must sign up for this category.
Opens – Drawing in top-notch climbers from across Australia, this category is tailored for climbers who project anything between Green and Black tags. Anyone who has podiumed in Intermediate categories in previous years must enter this category.
Participants who score the highest in the qualifiers round will have the opportunity to compete in the finals round, which will take place in the evening on the same day.
COMPETITION FORMAT
STAGE 1: PUMPFEST
Pumpfests are self-judged honesty-based climbing events, where competitors score themselves. Competitors have 3 hours to climb 30 boulders.
OPENS PUMPFEST/ QUALIFICATIONS – 7:30 – 10:30AM
Opens Pumpest/qualifications are from 7:30-10:30am. The top 6 male and female competitors w ill proceed to Opens Finals in the evening.
WALL RESET – 10:30 – 11:00AM
The setters will then reset the pumpfest climbs to be suitable for Novice/Inters climbers.
NOVICE/INTERMEDIATE PUMPFESTS – 11:00AM – 5:15PM
Novice/Inters climbers are split into 2 group time slots, and do not have a finals round.
WALL RESET- 5:15PM – 6:00PM
The setters will reset the wall in preparation for Opens Finals. In this time, we will have a variety of games and activities for everyone to enjoy.
STAGE 2: OPENS FINALS – 6:00PM – 8:00PM
AFTERPARTY (18+) STARTS
Come and join us our Official Afterparty and watch the finals with us!
Opens Finals of the event is run with the following rules:
There are 4 boulders. The top 6 from Male and Female Opens categories will each have 4 minutes+ to complete a boulder.

As this is an event meant for the enjoyment of all, we strongly encourage you to score yourself fairly and accurately according to the rules of the competition. Your category selection is integrity-based.
Please keep in mind Climbing Etiquette and Rules during the competition.
We will not tolerate ANY violence or aggressive behaviour towards our staff or judges. If you wish to contest a decision made by our judges, please provide adequate video footage or other evidence as proof. We always aim to provide a fair assessment of competitor’s results.

PUMPFEST SCORING:
Flash: 10 points
2nd Attempt: 7 points
3rd Attempt: 4 points
Additional Attempts: 1 point
FINALS SCORING:
Scores are determined based on:
Topping (completing) the climb
Holding “control” at the top
Number of attempts
If the Zone hold was reached
WHEN DO REGISTRATIONS CLOSE?
Friday 23rd of August, 11:59pm.
HOW DO I DISPUTE MY SCORE?
If you need to dispute your score, you have up to 30 minutes after the scores are displayed.
You must come into the gym and see the scoring desk for disputes – calling or email is not accepted.
We recommend staying at the gym until your score is displayed to ensure you have enough time to dispute it.
ARE SPECTATORS FREE?
As long as you’re not climbing – yes.
Tell me about the Afterparty (18+)
Get ready to rock the night away at our Official Afterparty, co-hosted by our friends at Fox Friday Craft Brewery! We’ll have Resident Portside DJs spinning tracks and cranking up the vibes. Have a crack at our fair dinkum games, or just kick back and soak up the good vibes. This party is where all the fun and excitement is at, so grab your mates, mark your calendars, and join us for a night you won’t forget.
Under 17s SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Youth may apply for Special Considerations ONLY if the below Eligibility Criteria are met.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be in the Opens category (ie. Climbing Green – Black tags). Applications for other categories will NOT be accepted.
- Must have prior competition climbing experience and be able to prove it.
How to Apply:

- Reasons why you would like to compete in West Coast Blocs?
- Eligible Youth must provide evidence of prior Opens-level competition experience/history.
- The deadline to submit your Special Consideration is Monday 5th of August, 5pm. This gives our team enough time to review and process all requests prior to the event.
- We will advise in the few weeks after 5th of August of your outcome.
Can I have a general session/climb during the WCB competition?
No, sorry. In order to climb during WCB you must be a registered competitor, and can only climb during your allocated timeslot.
Don’t worry though, many of our competition climbs will still be up after the event, so you are more than welcome to climb on these from the 25th August onwards!
